A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine this week discussed the contribution of dietary supplements to improving all cause mortality, cardiovascular deaths, and deaths from cancer. While there was an improvement in outcomes with Vitamin A, K, magnesium, and zinc, all the improvement was seen with intake of these compounds in FOOD. Not in dietary supplements. Calcium taken in doses above 1000mg seemed to actually increase the risk of some cancers. So if you are taking a supplement, not for a particular condition, but just to improve your longevity, you are way more likely to achieve your desired end by eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil than you are popping that pill.
