Kratom which comes from a tree in Southeast Asia, Mitragyna speciosa, has been linked to over 100 deaths in the U.S. It is marketed as an herbal supplement and therefore bound by no regulations. In Thailand and Indonesia the people use it medicinally for it’s opioid properties. It is used as a stimulant and as a pain reliever. As with many naturally occurring medicinals, there is in fact a therapeutic margin. Meaning there is a dose range where it is effective for the desired result, but exceeding that dose range can have deleterious effects including death. Interestingly, Kratom works on the mu opioid receptor and therefore many people who are past, present, and future victims of the opioid crisis use this as a way to deal with withdrawal symptoms. It ends up being too much and causes respiratory depression and death. Most alarming is that when I did a Google search on Kratom, the first thing that comes up is where I can buy it. Very easily usually in smoke shops.
